Very
close by we have several National Parks
and protected areas of great ecological interest as well as wonderful
destinations for days out.
Camping Aquarius also lies within the
boundary of the "Aiguamolls" National Park, which is an
important staging post for many migrating birds. The Park’s information
centre has an interesting observation point and there is a
scenic walk. |
| North
of the great plain of the Alt Empordà where the town of Sant Pere
Pescador is situated, is the National Park of L'Albera at the eastern end
of the Pyrenees. An abundant flora and fauna invite you to take relaxed
walks amongst standing stones and castles. On a clear day you can enjoy
magnificent panoramic views. |
Where
the Albera falls into the sea at the easternmost tip of Spain, the
Cap de Creus National Park has been created , with its incredible
rock formations. You can best enjoy the view of this natural
wonder from the sea, on board one of the cruises that we include
in our activity programme, at the campsite. |
South
of the Gulf is the fourth National Park in the vicinity of the campsite,
the Medes Islands, Spain's first underwater National Park. It can be
visited by taking a cruise in one of the glassbottom boats that can be
reserved at the campsite
reception.

About
30 kilometres inland, there is another spectacular
landscape to visit, the Volcanic National Park of La
Garrotxa. With old stone villages like Santa Pau, a cultural world
heritage site , and hidden from tourism,
Garrotxa welcomes us with its old world charm.
| Worth
mentioning is the Beech Wood of "La Fageda d'en Jordà", but
there's no doubt the greatest attraction are the Volcanoes. Though long
extinct, they can still ‘fire up’
our imaginations .
| CULTURE |
| Catalonia
is especially rich in culture and near the campsite we find plenty of
evidence of this. From important archeological sites, to romanic churches,
monasteries and medieval towns, to the most modern museums, everything is
there for those who seek cultural enrichment. |
Only
a few kilometres from Camping Aquarius are the Greko-Roman ruins
of Empuries, the most impressive
on the Iberian Peninsula, with their mosaics and a
fascinating museum. Close by there are also the ruins of
Ullastret, a settlement occupied from
Paleolithic till Pre-Roman
times. |
Amongst
the monasteries nearby ,two are especially worth mentioning .Vilabertran
is one and
Sant Pere de Rodes is the other. San Pere de Rodes was the
cradle of Christianity in Spain, and it also boasts
impressive panoramic views. |
For
those of you willing to venture further, we can recommend the monastery of
Montserrat, near Barcelona, where you can admire the image of the Black Madonna
"La Moreneta" and listen to the glorious chanting of the boys’ choir
. It's worth a visit just to see the spectacular rock formations of the actual
mountain of Montserrat itself.
You
can also combine this excursion with a visit to Barcelona, the exciting capital
of Catalonia, which is about 150 kms away from the campsite.
| In our activity
programme we offer several organized excursions to Barcelona by coach, where
expert guides will take you to the main attractions of the city without the need
for you to drive through its terrible traffic, or navigate its streets.
And
as we are talking about cities: you
shouldn’t miss a visit to our provincial capital, Girona, which is just 45
minutes away from us. In addition to being an important commercial centre, the
city of Girona offers an exceptional old town for the visito to explore, with
the second best kept Jewish quarter in Europe after Prague. A stroll through its
narrow streets will be as unforgettable, as will be the view, looking over the
city from the city walls. You can also visit
the largest single-span gothic cathedral in the world, or take a well deserved
rest in the cool shade of the Ramblas.
In
our county capital , Figueres, we should especially mention the theatre-museum
of the genius surrealist painter Salvador Dalí.It is really worth a visit!
Admirers of this artist will also
enjoy his castle-museum in Pubol and his house in Port Lligat . All of them are
quite close to us.
| As
well as cities and National Parks, there are also many small stone villages
nearby, some of which have been declared
national monuments or even world heritage sites. In their very well kept narrow
streets you will feel transported back to
the Middle Ages, and you can enjoy local cuisine in one of the many restaurants.
Next to the town of Pals you can visit Peratallada in the Baix Empordà, and in
the Garrotxa you shouldn’t miss a visit to Santa Pau which is amongst the most beautiful of the local medieval villages.
| Other
important attractions in the surrounding area are the small romanic churches and
chapels you can find in a great number of villages. Some of them
can even be reached by bike from the campsite. To find them we can
provide you
with a map with many bicycle routes starting from Camping Aquarius.
| But
not all villages in the area are made of stone. As we are located in the
fantastic Costa Brava, you can also easily find old fishermen’s villages on
the coast ,steeped in culture. For
example, at both ends of the Bay and less than 10 kms from the
campsite, are the villages of L'Escala and Roses. To the north we recommend a
visit to the white village of Cadaqués in the middle of the Cap de Creus
National Park, or its neighbour Port de la Selva.
To the south we recommend an excursion to the villages and small Bays of
the Cape of Begur, or to Tamariu or Calella de Palafrugell, and of course you
mustn’t miss the view from the cliffs at the lighthouse of Far de Sant Sebastia.

| SHOPPING
AND CUISINE
| Once
a famous writer said: "it's difficult to eat badly in Catalonia". Well, he was
right. Catalonia offers a rich and healthy mediterranean cuisine,
which is available throughout our region. Seafood from the Costa Brava is
outstanding and you will find it all along the coast. Veal
from Girona is well known as amongst the best in Europe and we prefer it
grilled ; some specialities even combine fish and meat reflecting our position
between land and sea. Among the desserts, the famous "Crema Catalana"
is a delicacy for all “with a sweet tooth".
It
is very easy to go shopping from
Camping Aquarius: you'll find suitable souvenirs right in the town of Sant Pere
Pescador and on the promenades in Roses and L'Escala, where you can also enjoy
an evening walk. Figueres is the best shopping center for boutiques , quality
shoes and modern design.
| The city
of Girona offers all the advantages of a big city, including a newly built
shopping mall. And for local handicrafts there is La Bisbal, well known for its
ceramics.
Our
privileged geographical situation offers
quick and easy access to a wide range of attractions and activities, from the
Mediterranean Sea to the Pyrenees mountains . You can even make a one-day trip
to Andorra, the tax-free shopping paradise.
| All
in all the huge variety of attractions and activities in our region, make it an

you with a small selection of the vast possibilities available here.
